Tyree Guyton Exhibit Opens

Tyree Guyton, the artist behind Detroit’s Heidelberg project, opens his first solo show in three years tonight at the Inner State Gallery at the Eastern Market. The Heidelberg project, which transformed the vacant homes in Guyton’s childhood neighborhood into stunning sculptures of found objects, grew to be one of Detroit’s most visited attractions. Guyton’s new show, “Spirit,” comes after several of the art houses were destroyed by arson. Some of the pieces in “Spirit” have been salvaged from the burned-out remains, and Guyton says any damage from the flames is just part of the story.

When Can We Move In?

This single family home in Chicago is stunning from every angle. The use of garden terraces, unique outdoor landscaping and a rooftop garden provides the residents with green space galore right in the heart of the city. Finished just this year by Dirk Denison Architects, the house’s interior was also done by the firm. To get a tour of the equally breath-taking inside of the house, check out Arch Daily.

Faribault Fashion

Minnesota fashion had its time to shine at the MN4MN fashion show this September. Models walked the runway in fashions from local designers and specialty boutiques. Our favorite look of the weekend: Faribault Woolen Mills, making a statement with their high quality woolen goods.

Soho House In Chicago

Soho House, the exclusive members-only club with locations in New York, Toronto and Mumbai, opened their Chicago location in August in a renovated West Loop warehouse. The transformation has to be seen to be believed: the former Chicago Belting Company warehouse now features a bar, lounge, spa, boutique hotel, vintage boxing ring and rooftop pool. With all the new luxury touches, the building still maintains some of its original character. “That’s kind of our thing, the grit and the glamour,” said Soho’s design director, Vicky Charles. “It’s a lot easier when you have an existing building with great bones.”

The Bad Plus

The Bad Plus, the critically acclaimed jazz trio, will hit Japan, Germany, the Netherlands and more on tour in the next month, but their roots are right here in the Midwest, in Minneapolis. Their newest CD Inevitable Western debuted in August and is definitely worth a listen.

Well, Looky Here

Askov Finlayson just released their Fall / Winter Look Book and it has us planning a Northern getaway, stat. The men’s boutique and clothing brand traveled to a cabin in Ely, Minnesota to showcase its new wares: outerwear, work pants, well-tailored blazers and of course Red Wing boots. The Northern Minnesota landscape makes as big of an impression as the clothes, with a picture-perfect canoe trip out on the lakes.

Going Green

The newest building on campus at Case Western is having no trouble at all fitting in, thanks to its green roof and floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The new Tinkham Veale Center, designed by Perkins + Will, blends right in with the campus quad. Students immediately took to the building’s “tail section” — a sloping lawn that provides an excellent vantage point for surveying all the action on campus.

Own a piece of architectural history with this stunning home by Frank Lloyd Wright. Built in 1940, this Wausau-area home features Wright’s signature Prairie-style windows and other one-of-a-kind touches. The four bedroom, two bathroom home just went on the market for $189,000. Sounds like a steal!

Shadow Cubes

Indianapolis artist Anila Quayyum Agha’s striking shadow cube took home the top prize at the ArtPrize competition in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was the first artist ever to win both the contest’s popular review and critical review, taking home a $300,000 prize. With just a single lightbulb in the center, Anila’s shadow box casts impossibly elaborate shadows on gallery walls. It is currently installed at the Grand Rapids Art Museum.

The Family Business

Hennepin Made doesn’t stop at making extraordinary light fixtures — they shine the light on other Midwest makers as well in their Luminate blog. This month, they sat down with Nathan O’Malley of Leather Works MN, a leather shop owned by Nathan’s parents. Check out the interview for a discussion of what’s it like to work with your family and why handmade goods still matter. A good read!

World’s Best Bars

The accolades for Chicago’s bar scene just keep on coming. After being named America’s Best Drinking City by GQ, Chicago now has a new jewel in its boozy crown. Make that two jewels. Chicago bars The Aviary and the tiki-themed Three Dots And A Dash both made the list of the World’s 50 Best Bars, at 13th and 27th place, respectively. Cheers to that! Pictured is The Midnight Mary #2, a foggy concoction from The Aviary.

In The Trees In Michigan

This modern weekend retreat is tucked in a thicket of trees just an hour and a half outside Chicago. The Bridgman, Michigan getaway provides stylish weekend accommodations for a busy couple who turned to Scott Rappe to design their dream home. Rappe positioned the home perfectly on the pie-shaped property, providing privacy from other properties but still offering floor-to-ceiling views of the natural surroundings. To tour the interior, check out Dwell’s full feature on this Michigan marvel.

Duluth Pack, the Minnesota-based heritage manufacturer of bags and backpacks, tries to never waste a scrap. They posted this picture of their re-use process in action — their canvas scraps are woven into rugs. Love the fall colors.

Sit On It Detroit

It’s all in the name: Sit On It Detroit is a community effort to provide benches at city bus stops that have no seating. The finished products, however, are so much more than benches. Handmade by community members with salvaged and donated materials, the benches also feature built-in bookshelves stocked with reading material. If you want to learn more about the project or check out their workspace, head to Drinks x Design tomorrow, hosted at Sit On It Detroit.

Luftwerk

Mies van derRohe’s 1950s masterpiece the Farnsworth House is about to step into the spotlight once again. Artist collaborative Luftwerk will illuminate the site on October 17 with original video projections, scored by original music from Chicago musician Owen Clayton Condon. Luftwerk raised funds for the event via Kickstarter. As the National Trust for Historic Preservation writes, the event promises to highlight “the primary characteristics of the Farnsworth House—its transparency and minimalism—to provide an entirely new experience with the building while celebrating what makes it so distinctive.”

Modern Lake House In Missouri

This weekend getaway takes its inspiration from the lake. Stepping into the home is like stepping onto a dock — you move from river rocks onto an elevated wood plank at the entrance. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer uninterrupted views of the water. Built in 2013 by Dake-Wells Architecture, the modern marvel overlooks Table Rock Lake, just south of Springfield. For a full tour of the equally stunning interior, check out Dwell.

Schwandtoberfest

Bauhaus Brew Labs, the Northeast Minneapolis brewery that really knows how to party, welcomed fall with their Schwandtoberfest event this Saturday. There were lederhosen, bratwursts, Bavarian pretzels and their seasonal beer, the märzen-style festbier Schwandtoberfest. They offered “free high-fives to anyone dressed in formal shorts,” but we didn’t spot any party-goers that took the bet. Highlight of the night? The Haus band.

Crayon Art

Christian Faur makes art from crayons, but not the way you’re thinking of. He dyes his own wax to make crayons, and then arranges them in a pattern he works out on the computer — each custom crayon tip becomes a “pixel” in the final work. Faur currently lives in Granville, Ohio and teaches at Denison University. His work is featured in the most recent issue of American Craft, which highlights forty artists using unusual mediums.
