Cleveland Lecture: Marika Shioiri-Clark on Dignifying Design

Marika Shioiri-Clark, principal of SOSHL Studio will speak at Kent State University on Friday, May 31 at 5:30p.m. as part of AIA Cleveland’s Emerging Practitioner Lecture Series. Based in Cleveland, SOSHL Studio is dedicated to creating a social impact through architecture and design.

“Light Up Livernois” in Detroit

On May 31 and June 1, stop by “Light Up Livernois” at 19410 Livernois Avenue. The event will feature music, theater, fashion, art, and food to celebrate the kickoff of the Livernois Community Storefront project. The project will activate a vacant storefront and will turn it into a community hub.

Amalia Pica at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

Modern artist, Amalia Pica, explores communication and civic participation through her work.

Pica uses simple materials including photocopies, light bulbs, drinking glasses, beer bottles, bunting, cardboard, and other found materials to create work that is beautiful, yet addresses fundamental issues of communication.

Herman Miller’s Threads in Detroit

Join a2Modern on Thursday, June 6th for “Threads,” an interactive presentation with graphic designer Steve Frykholm and writer Clark Malcolm, both employees at Herman Miller.

Frykholm and Malcolm will give a presentation on the history of design, ideas and people at Herman Miller. Audience members will choose which topics will be discussed.

East Lansing Modern

The exhibit “East Lansing Modern, 1940-1970” explores the city’s place in Michigan’s modern design heritage. On display now through August 18, 2013, the exhibit examines the post war housing boom and the influence it had in shaping the Modernist city.

Exhibit visitors will also see the furnishings, small appliances, tableware and other decorative arts which occupied the homes during this time.

Chicago’s Langham Hotel

Get a sneak preview of the Langham Hotel in Chicago on Marina City Online. The hotel is situated in the old Mies van der Rohe-designed IMB Plaza. Mies van der Rohe’s grandson, Dirk Lohan, helped his grandfather on the original building and he is back helping to design the Langham Hotel.

COLD in Cleveland

The Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative recently announced the launch of their initiative called, “COLD,” which stands for the Center for Outdoor Living Design. The center will encourage designers to engage more creatively with opportunities presented by winter weather in urban environments.

Designers can also enter a competition to submit design ideas on how to revitalizing cold climate urban environments COLDSCAPES: New Visions for Cold Weather Cities is accepting registration through May 24. Click here to learn more about COLD.

Jens Jensen exhibit at the Goldstein Museum of Design

Charles King House Tour in Belleville, IL

On Saturday, May 11 from 1:00-5:00, the Belleville Historical Society will hold a house tour of seven Belleville residences designed by Charles King. Architect Charles King, a graduate of the University of Illinois School of Architecture practiced in Belleville from 1949 to 1961 and designed in the Mid-Century Modern style.
